UFRC – CIS football players of the week

SFU teammates sweep Week 1 awards

Sept. 2, 2009

OTTAWA (CIS) – Simon Fraser teammates Bernd Dittrich, Mark Bailey and Jeff Thompson are the first Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week of the 2009 season, as selected by University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC).

The Clan (1-0), Canada West finalists a year ago, opened conference play last Saturday with a convincing 26-7 win over cross-town rival UBC.

Dittrich, a third-year quarterback from Vienna, Austria, completed 13 of 23 passes for 185 yards and no interceptions as the Clan racked up 312 yards of offence. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound science student also amassed 36 rushing yards on only four carries, three of which were for key first downs on SFU scoring drives.

Bailey, a fourth-year linebacker from Surrey, B.C., took home the weekly honour on defence after he tallied 5.5 tackles and one quarterback sack as the Clan held the Thunderbirds to 229 yards of total offence, including 125 through the air. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound arts student anchored a defensive unit that was missing the services of three starters for the campaign opener.

Thompson, a third-year cornerback from St. Louis, Missouri, was stellar on special teams in his CIS debut racking up a game-high 100 yards on six punt returns and 34 more on a kickoff return. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound arts student, who redshirted in 2008, made his presence felt early as he took UBC’s first punt of the afternoon 47 yards to the T-Birds’ 43-yard line.
