St. Francis Xavier – Preview

2009 CIS FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEW: StFX X-Men
2008 regular season record: 4-4
2008 regular season standings: 2nd place
2008 playoff record: 1-1
2008 playoff finish: lost to Saint Mary’s 29-27 in AUS championship
General Write-Up:
The X-Men hope to return to the Loney Bowl-AUS Championship game again this season after their second consecutive heartbreaking loss in the league final to the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The four-team AUS conference will once again prove to be competitive, and the X-Men will face Concordia and Bishops in interlock games.

After posting a 4-4 league record and sole possession of second place last season, the blue and white will be looking to chip away at the
first place Huskies.

The X-Men should be re-energized for the start of the 2009 campaign as they will be playing on a new artificial playing turf at Oland Stadium, in addition to playing under a new head coach in StFX alumnus Gary Waterman.

A former team captain and three-time conference all-star with
the X-Men, Waterman has been the Defensive Coordinator for the past three years and will switch to the offensive coordination this fall.

The X-Men return a core group of players from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, including eight AUS All-Stars, along with the AUS Defensive Player of the Year in Henoc Muamba and the AUS rushing leader in James Green. Coach Waterman has a solid recruiting
class coming in which will add depth to the current roster.
