Golden Bears hit Foote Field for training camp

On Friday, August 21, 2009 the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team will hit the turf at Foote Field for the ninth training camp under head coach Jerry Friesen.

Camp opens with two-a-day practices each day until August 27 when the team departs for Saskatoon for a scrimmage and an exhibition game against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Golden Bears and Huskies will scrimmage with their non-starting-roster players between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 28, and then take the field for a starting roster exhibition game at 7:00 p.m.

The team returns with 45 players from last season’s roster, including 15 starters total from both sides of the ball.

Alberta lost three players due to fifth-year eligibility status and, on top of that, Simeon Rottier (OL) and Gord Hinse (OL) were respectively selected 1st and 11th overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos in the 2009 CFL draft. Greg Whelan (DL) was signed by the Eskimos to a free-agent contract.

Key returnees for the Evergreen and Gold defence include: two-time Canada West All-Star Dan Bass Jr. (5th) and Jean-Marc Jones (4th) in the linebacker corps; defensive end Craig Gerbrandt (4th) who posted 44.5 tackles and six sacks in his debut season last year; Chris Muchena (DB) who likely becomes the Golden Bears shut-down corner; safety Jason Hetherington who led Alberta in tackles last season; and Dean Guedo alongside Brent Krawchuk also returning in the secondary.

Randon Ralph is making his return to the secondary after taking a year off. The defensive back from Raymond, AB recorded 19 tackles and five pass knockdowns as a freshman with the Bears in 2007. He is the younger cousin to former Golden Bears receivers Dustin and Brett. Brett, and older brother Brock, both currently play in the CFL for Calgary and Winnipeg, respectively.

On offence, fourth-year offensive lineman Terris Paliwoda will anchor the line while Nicholas Ternovatsky and Ben Downs will be looked upon for leadership as returning starters.

Tendayi Jozzy, Matt Jarvis, and Dale Stevenson all return to the Alberta backfield while second year student-athletes Mike Wasylyniuk and Matt Orlicz are the lone two returning starters among the receivers.

Two-time CIS All-Canadian, punter, and place-kicker, Hugh O’Neill, returns to lead Alberta’s special teams.

Friesen, the 2005 CIS Coach of the Year, and his staff hit the recruiting trail hard in the off-season and expect that the talent that was brought in can push the incumbents, or, in some cases, become starters themselves.

Among the recruits expected to see time this season are: Julian Marchand (QB – Calgary Colts), Darek Graff (OL – Edmonton Wildcats), Chris Klevin (WR – Kamloops Broncos), Will Henry (OL – Winnipeg Rifles), Harpreet Turka (RB – Winnipeg Rifles), Anthony Malott (WR – Oak Park), Kyle Brow (OL – Archbishop Jordan), Corey Kuzik (DL – Okanagan Sun), Smith Wright (FB – Calgary Colts), Kevin Chave (DL – Saskatoon Hilltops), Jesse Valleau (WR – Wainwright) and Karl Mome (WR – Lathrop, California).
